Dokken Engineering provided preliminary engineering, final design and design support during construction for improvements to the SR 78/Sycamore Avenue interchange. The project consisted of relocating 2 ramps and an access road, widening of Sycamore Avenue, new auxiliary lanes in both directions, extensive aesthetically treated sound and retaining walls, and strengthening of a box culvert.

The development of a corridor master landscape plan for SR 78, between Melrose Drive to Smilax Road, showing sound wall and retaining wall aesthetic enhancements was needed for incorporation into 3 other interchange projects on SR 78. The key issues included updating the geometrics and profile for the project report, right-of-way acquisition, and funding assistance.

Once the geometrics and profile were set, design exception fact sheets were prepared and processed to update the project report. After determining the necessary right-of-way and easements to be acquired, Dokken Engineering prepared the appraisal documents, provided acquisition assistance to the City of Vista, and provided relocation assistance to the residents of 21 homes. Additionally, Dokken Engineering worked closely with the City to acquire TEA Grant funding for the textured concrete sound and retaining walls, and SANDAG funded the metering at both ramps. Close coordination with Caltrans and with two on-going construction projects within the interchange was required.
