Dokken Engineering prepared the PS&E for this interchange improvement project located on US-50 at Ponderosa Road. Traffic at the existing off-ramp intersections was controlled by stop signs. Congestion was further exacerbated by stop sign-controlled intersections for the frontage roads within 100 feet of the off-ramp intersections. Dokken Engineering developed the project which minimized impacts to the traveling public during construction and maintains a minimum level of service “C” through the year 2025.

Signalization
Four signalized intersections were added to the termini of the two off-ramps and frontage roads. All four signals with loop sensors are interconnected for optimum efficiency.

Widening
All routes within the interchange were widened to increase capacity. The eastbound and westbound off ramps were widened. South Shingle Road was widened to two lanes in the northbound direction to allow a left/through turn and a right turn/through lane. This modification required the acquisition of additional right-of-way. In addition, Ponderosa Road was widened to two lanes in the northbound direction. This widening also required additional right-of-way.

Construction Management
Throughout the construction phase, Dokken Engineering provided immediate response to construction-related questions and reviewed the site with County personnel on a regular basis.
