I-580/Mococo Road Overcrossing

The Mococo Overhead carries a complex series of lane splits into the Benicia Martinez Toll Plaza on northbound I-580. Dokken Engineering was hired by FCI Constructors to design a Cost Reduction Incentive Proposal (CRIP) to redesign this eight span, 2-frame, 1,200 feet long variable width structure over Marina Vista Road and the UPR tracks. The design changed the superstructure type from precast girders to a cast-in-place box girder bridge. The key to making the CRIP work was to preserve the original substructure design by ensuring that the new superstructure weighed less or equal than the original design.

This unusual structure varies in width from 82 feet to 224 feet to accommodate lane splits into the toll plaza. The post-tensioning is limited to Frame 1 where the width tapers to 135 feet. The width in the final 2 spans varies from 135 feet to 224 feet. The reinforced concrete spans were cast in three stages due to the extreme width of the bridge.

This project was a very successful application of the Cost Reduction Incentive Proposal process where $300,000 was returned to the State.
