The Interstate 5/Lomas Santa Fe Interchange project demonstrates Dokken Engineering's proven ability to take a project from a concept, through preliminary engineering, Project Study Report, Project Report, environmental document, PS&E, and finally through design support through the bid and construction phases.

Initially, the project was designed as a single project that included both the auxiliary lanes and interchange improvements. Working closely with the City of Solana Beach, Caltrans and SANDAG to meet funding requirements, it was determined that the most cost effective way to construct the project was to create 2 separate projects.

Auxiliary Lanes
The first project phase consists of the addition of northbound and southbound auxiliary lanes along I-5. Dokken Engineering prepared a separate PS&E package for the auxiliary lanes.

Interchange/HOV
Lanes Extension

The second project phase combined interchange improvements with the extension of median HOV lanes. Working with Caltrans staff as the lead, the interchange PS&E package was incorporated into the HOV extension project. All of this was completed with a highly accelerated schedule to ensure funding sources would not be lost.
