Dokken Engineering provided the preliminary planning, preliminary engineering analysis, and final PS&E bid/construction documents and will provide engineering support during construction for SR 49 and Hulbert Way improvements north of Auburn. The Plaza-49 commercial/retail development required a new signal at Hulbert Way and widening of approximately 2,000 feet of this heavily used section of SR 49. In addition to design services, Dokken Engineering prepared the PSR, PEER, and the Caltrans Encroachment Permit application. The project was built simultaneously with Caltrans’ SR 49 Safety & Operational Improvements Project, |
Caltrans does not normally approve the simultaneous construction of more than one major project on a given area of the State highway, due to the inherent complications which result from multiple contractors operating in close proximity to each other within the right of way. However, through careful planning and close coordination with the District 03 Permits Office and Placer County, Dokken demonstrated that overlaps in work could be eliminated, resulting in significant cost savings to each contract. Changes were then made to the design packages to eliminate the duplicate areas of work, and better separate the operations of the 2 contractors. As a result, a savings of nearly $600,000 was reached on each contract and the Plaza Project construction schedule was accelerated by approximately 12 months. |
