Dokken Engineering completed the PS&E for modifications to the I-80/ Elkhorn Boulevard - Greenback Lane Interchange. Modifications were required to improve operations at the interchange. Interchange work included the widening of, and elimination of the free right turn at the eastbound off-ramp, ramp metering, and HOV bypass lanes were added at all four on-ramps.

The capacity of the Elkhorn - Greenback corridor between Diablo Drive and Garfield Avenue was increased by widening the overcrossing and approaches from six lanes to eight, with shoulders and sidewalks. Abutment slope paving, approach slabs and architectural enhancements were also added.

The existing two-span pre-stressed concrete box girder structure was widened on each side with single-cell pre-stressed box girders. Vertical clearance over the freeway was insufficient for conventional falsework. Thus, the new box girders were designed to be constructed in an elevated position and lowered onto the foundations after removal of falsework. Retaining walls at the Diablo Drive and Garfield Avenue intersections required special design, due to large wall heights and limited right-of-way.

Completed in 2004, the I-80/Elkhorn Boulevard - Greenback Lane Interchange modification project was designed to increase the traffic safety and efficiency of traffic flow, and aesthetically improve the appearance of the Elkhorn - Greenback corridor.
