Dokken Engineering prepared the PS&E for the I-5/Barranca Parkway/I-5 Overcrossing and median HOV ramp for the Orange County Transit District and Irvine Community Development Company. This project involved a ramp intersection on structure in the median of the existing freeway with accompanying traffic control devices and appurtenances.

The project required structural phasing with the overcrossing being developed first to include expansion capabilities for a future ramp to the south of the overcrossing. The Barranca HOV project required a complex prestressed box girder structure to accommodate HOV access in the median of I-5.

The overcrossing and ramp designs were developed for separate clients and advertised separately. This was Orange County and Caltrans' first use of the median HOV ramp concept. At the opening ceremony, Caltrans referred to this as the "drop-ramp" and implied that this first would add to the lexicon of engineering terms in California.
