Dokken Engineering completed the preliminary engineering analysis, final PS&E, bid/construction documents, and provided engineering support during construction for the replacement of the existing 9th Street Bridge over the Tuolumne River for the City of Modesto. Dokken Engineering had previously been contracted to provide seismic analyses and to prepare a retrofit strategy for this bridge. Based upon these seismic analyses, it was determined the major failure mechanism would be lateral spreading forces on the bent foundation due to liquefaction. As a result, the most cost-effective retrofit strategy was a complete replacement of the bridge. |
The replacement structure is 2,064 feet long and 80 feet wide. The existing bridge remained open during construction by staging the construction and demolition sequences to accommodate local traffic. The bridge passes over a regional park and required special considerations concerning the aesthetic features of the bridge, such as arched girders, pedestrian overlooks at the river, unique column treatments that mirrored aspects of the trees along the river, forecourt treatment, non-standard lighting supports and luminaries, and railing types and textures. Development of these aesthetic features required the coordination of a three-agency partnership which is oversaw the development of the regional park. |
