Dokken Engineering was selected and awarded Caltrans Contract 59A0279, a $3 million statewide on-call structural design contract by Caltrans District 59 to provide PS&E bid/construction packages and construction support for 20 bridge widenings, three bridge lengthenings, and several custom designed sound walls, retaining walls, and box culvert lengthenings throughout Los Angeles County.

Close coordination between several reviewing agencies and Caltrans was required to complete the projects, including: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, California Department of Fish & Game, Los Angeles County Flood Control District, and the City of Los Angeles.

Some of the more challenging projects under this contract were:

  • Tujunga Wash Bridge: Widening included the addition of two curved steel girders to support a widened shoulder and a new sound wall along the outside edge of the bridge.
  • Whitsett Avenue Undercrossing & Fulton Avenue Undercrossing: The undercrossings were widened to accommodate new sound walls with post-tensioned box girders cast above grade and lowered into place.
  • Alameda Avenue Overcrossing/ Hollywood Way Overcrossing: To accommodate a new on-ramp under these overcrossings, the structures were lengthened and joined at one abutment location.
